This is part of our Original Artwork series dedicated to players who had a #CupOfCoffee in the Major Leagues.
Sketch of Eleanor Engle on a Disposable Coffee Cup a la 1953 Topps
- On June 21 1952 Eleanor Engle signed a contract to play for the Harrisburg Senators (a Philadelphia Athletics Affiliate) of the Class B Interstate League.
- Before Engle got the opportunity to play, National Association President George Trautman issued a ruling banning the signing of Women as Players. This agreement was also upheld by MLB commissioner Ford Frick.
- Topps issued a 1953 Style Card of Eleanor Engle in a retro set 1991 Archives.
- The photo on the card was well circulated in 1952 and shows Engle's "Teammates" seated on the bench but far away from her.
