The Seattle Mariners spoiled Ryan Howard Bobble Head Night by beating the Phillies 5-2 in a game that really wasn't that close

The Phillies may not have looked that good, but the August Sunset did provide some nice views
 

 Ryan Howard did connect with a Double in his 1-4 night which pretty much made him the Phillies offensive star on a rather dismal night for the squad.

Hisashi Iwakuma

Credit has to be given to the Mariners starting pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma who is having an incredible season. He pitched 8 innings struck out 11 while walking NONE and yielding only 4 hits, Howard's double and three singles. For the season Iwamura is posting a very healthy 10.0 K/BB ration (120-12). A year ago Iwakuma led the AL in Pitchers WAR. 

AJ Burnett

The Tuesday night start by AJ Burnett put him over some sort of Game Started Threshold that netted the veteran more coin then Team Phungo takes home in a year. Postgame it was revealed that Burnett mentioned that he doubts he will pitch in 2015.

 

The Phanatic gives Robinson Cano some pointers. 

I was watching a rebroadcast of the game (Team Phungo is a glutton) and Tom McCarthy mentioned that Cano gave Phillies coach Larry Bowa a Rolex Watch as a thank you gift for all the help that Bowa had given Cano while both were with the Yankees. 

I was impressed with Cano's field presence, while he had an unremarkable game (single in 4ABs, RBI, Run Scored) he showed some leadership. He captained the infield on shifts and appeared to be frequently discussing hitting with rookie 3B Kyle Seager

  Felix Hernandez

Good Guy Award goes out to Felix Hernandez who signed A TON of autographs. Other GGAs for The Phillies Cody Asche and the Mariners Fernando Rodney. Several of the Mariners signed a couple of autographs. Pretty good for a club that is right on the edge of the playoff hunt. Princeton Alum Chris Young also appeared to hosting some local fans and invited them down on the field for BP.

 Bobblehead

Just wanted to note that the Ryan Howard comes with a busted bat, which seems pretty appropriate.

A few seasons ago every Phillies game was a sellout and Bobble Head nights were a particularly tough ticket. This week they Honored one of their biggest starts the Phillies drew less than 32 thousand fans.

Congrats to Felix Hernandez on his Perfect Game. 

This pix is from a game where Hernandez faced the Yankees at the old stadium in 2008.  Unfortunately for him he did not fare as well v the Bombers as he did agaisnt the Rays.  Johnny Damon had a big day off of King Felix with 3 hits - A Homer and 2 doubles as the Yankees won 6-1. 

Unfortunately Team Phungo let an ugly typo go through on this card as I have incorrectly named Felix "Feliz"

2009 Phungo #34 Felix Hernandez

I love the idea that baseball bloggers have created their own awards. Last week Collective Troll was good enough to point out that the Walter Johnson Awards for the best Pitcher in the NL and AL were won by the Phillies own Roy Halladay and he Mariners Felix Hernandez respectively.

As a Phils fan you may have expected me to have posted Roy Halladay here. But as a lazy person who doesn't purchase many new packs I have yet to procure a Halladay Phils card.

Instead I have chosen this opportunity to show the team in the Pacific Northwest some love. This card is from the 2009 Phungo set. The photo was taken during a poor start by Hernandez at the old Yankee Stadium during his disappointing 2008 campaign. The Yankees got to Felix for 6 runs on 12 hits including a dinger by Johnny Damon.

As for the card - I mention Hernandez throwing arm as right (RHP) and his card number is 34 - same as his uniform number. However, if Felix gets another Phungo Card in the future he will need to settle for a secondary number as #34 will likely be taken by a different superstar pitcher. If I were to create this card today I would likely note Hernandez as the staff ACE. But back in 2009 that was debatable - and he was actually probably behind Cliff Lee in the Mariners rotation going into 2010.

Happy New Year - Year of the Tiger!

Tomorrow marks the beginning of the Year of the Tiger according to the Chinese Zodiac.

2010 is The Year of the Tiger as well as the past years 1998, 1986, 1974, 1962, 1950 ,1938 and beyond at 12 year intervals.

We at team Phungo will celebrate by posting a few cards of some Tigers.

1962 2009 Topps Allen & Ginters #68 Jamie Moyer

Hard to believe that Jamie is starting his 5th cycle of the zodiac and has a chance to be a pitcher this season. He has been a great player and member of the community and I hope he can return for one more season.

Looking ahead a year, if Moyer were to be issued a 2011 Topps Heritage card, he would probably be the first active player to have a Heritage card from his birth year. Not sure if Julio Franco hung on that long or not.
