1998 First Overall Pick Pat Burrell

Last week the Broncos Superbowl Winning QB Peyton Manning officially announced his retirement.

We are taking this moment to take a look at a Phillies outfielder that has something in common with Mr Manning.

Pat Burrell
1999 Topps Stadium Club #151 Pat Burell

Within a few months of each other Peyton Manning and Pat Burrell were both draft first overall in their respective sports.

Burrell is one of twelve Draft Pick Cards that run from #149-#160 in the set. The Dozen cards are all RCs, none of which is more significant that Burrell. The subset does include another Phillies Draftee, Eric Valent.

SABR
I have been a Member of SABR (Society for American Baseball Research) since 2013 when the National convention was hosted in Philadelphia. This past weekend I gave my first presentation in front of the local SABR affiliate the Connie Mack Chapter. The subject was the success rate of #1 Overall picks in the MLB Draft.

The Phillies are drafting #1 for the first time since the Burrell pick in 1998. I was interested in finding out what the success rate of #1 Picks have been across the history of the draft. I found close to 3/4 of all #1s achieve at least one +2.0 WAR season. A more substantial single season +5.0 WAR season was achieved by a much more modest 1/3 of the candidates. Number Ones reached the playoffs at a rate of 65% of which just short of half (31%) reached the World Series.

In terms of these numbers I judged Burrell a success. His peak WAR was +4.5 which is substantially more that the +2.0 WAR of a pedestrian starter, but not quite an All-Star level of +5.0. However, more importantly to me as a Phillies fan he was among the 31% that reached the World Series and also the 23% that took home a ring.

The powerpoint slides from presentation are below, They are tough to follow without the commentary, but it gives you an idea what I was attempting to learn about the #1 pick.

The Phillies Last 16th overall Pick Trey McCall and the 1985 MLB Draft

Tonight the Phillies have the 16th pick in the 2013 MLB entry draft.  Thiis is the highest pick the Phils have had since picking Gavin Floyd at #4 in 2001.  The Phils have had a number of recent picks in the #16 neighborhood including Cole Hamels (#17, 2002), Chase Utley (#15, 2000) and 4A pitcher Joe Savery (#19, 2007). They have also picked jettisoned pitchers Kyle Drabek (#18, 2006) and Brett Myers (#12, 1999) in nearby spots.

This Phillies have only ever specifically picked in the #16 spot once during the June Draft. That pick was a High School Catcher out of Virginia named Trey McCall in 1985. Today we turn back the clock 27 years and take a look into that pick and the rest of the 1985 MLB Draft.

Phillies
Unfortunately McCall never had first round impact as a player.  He spent five seasons in the Philllies system reaching as high as single A Clearwater in 1989

The remainder of the Phillies 1985 draft yielded 5 players that reached the majors, including pitchers Bruce Ruffin (Rd 2/34th overall), Jason Grimsley (Rd 10), and Wally Ritchie(Rd 4).

1985 MLB Draft
The best player taken in the first round of the 1985 draft was Barry Bonds (#6 Pirates), The round also yielded HoF Shortstop Barry Larkin (#4 Reds).  The best first round pick after McCall was Bond's PED brethern Rafael Palmiero (#22 Cubs) other notables include Brian McRae (#17 Royals) Joe McGrane (#18 Cardinals) Gregg Jefferies (#20 Mets).  The first overall pick of the 1985 draft was BJ Surhoff by the Orioles followed by Will Clark to the Giants and Bobby Witt (Rangers)

Other 1985 round 1 notables are Pete Incaviglia (#8 Expos as a 3B!!!) Walt Weiss (#11 A's) Tommy Greene (#14 Braves) Joey Cora (#23 Padres).  Chris Gwynn was drafted #10 overall - 48 picks prior to his Hall of Fame brother Tony's postion in the 1981 draft.

Later rounds yielded Randy Johnson (round 2, Expos) Tino Martinez (3, Red Sox - unsigned) Bobby Thigpen (4, ChiSox) David Justice (4, Braves ) Jeff Brantley (6, Giants) NFL HoF Deion Sanders (6, Royals -  unsigned) Jason Grimsley (10, Phils) (Bo Jackson (20, Angels) John Smotlz (22, Tigers) Mark Grace (24, Cubs ) Jim Abbott (36,Blue Jays)

High School picks and Catchers
McCall was the 4th higjest among the High School Prospects taken in the first round, only one of which made the major leagues (Tommy Greene). Among Catchers McCall was the 2nd taken behind Kurt Brown (#2 White Sox) who also didn't make the majors.

The highest pick at catcher that made the majors was Bill McGuire who had a cup of coffee with the Mariners who drafted him 27th overall. Other notable players drafted at Cather in 1985 were Phillies Alums Todd Pratt (21 BoSox) and Lenny Webster (13 Twins), Mike MacFarlane (Rd 17 Royals - played 13 seasons, who knew?) Chad Kreuter (3 Rangers) Soctt Servais (20 Mets) Don Wakamatsu (First Asian-American Manager #4 Reds)
Trey McCall 2013

Today the former professional baseball catcher finds himself at the helm of the Emory & Henry Wasps of the Old Dominion Athletcis Conference (ODAC - NCAA D3).  McCall has been with the Wasps since 2005, This season the Wasps, based out of Emory Virginia, had a tough 9-27 season finishing last in the ODAC. Trey McCall also peforms Assistant AD duties Emory and Henry and he will spend the summer of 2013 as an assistant coach with the Cotuit Kettleers in the prestigous Cape Cod League.

Moneyball 2012 - Chad Bradford

Time to return to Moneyball 2012 which I have neglected for so long that the feature started out as Moneyball 2011 and it is been at least 5 months since we posted on the subject.

Chad Bradford is one of Billy Beane's diamond in the rough trade pick ups.  The other thing that we find out about Bradford in Moneyball is that Bradford is a sindwinding righty.  Anytime an issue emerges with his pitching Bradford lowers his delivery slighty until at the time of "Moneyball" Bradford is actually dragging his knuckles on the ground when he pitches.

2003 Topps #29 Chad Bradford (image swiped from Baseball Card Database)

Bradford's tenure with the A's lasted until 2005 when he was traded to the Boston Red Sox. He eventually found his way to the Tampa Bay Rays and contributed to their 2008 American League Championship team.  Bradford made it to the postseason 7 times over a 12 year career.

2 degrees of Separation

I once met a college teammate of Chad Bradford.  Just some guy I met in a bar.  I am pretty sure he really knew Bradford, because who the hell is ever going to bring up that they played baseball with a set up reliever.  This happened several years ago - the bar has changed hands a few times since then - and all I remember about the conversation is that Chad Bradford was pretty much on the same level as the rest of the pitchers on the University of Southern Mississippi team, Then one year he shows up and has 5 more MPH and became an MLB prospect. It was also mentioned that Bradford was trying to hang on long enough for his major league pension to kick in.  I believe to get across the pension bridge you need to have 10 years of major league service, which Bradford should have cleared.

Chad Bradford 2012.

Tonight Bradford is representing the A's at the MLB draft.  He has been retired since 2009.  According to his Wikipedia page he is currently coaching in his native Mississippi.

Other draft Reps include HoFs Frank Robinson, Fergie Jenkins, and Tommy LaSorda

The Phils will be represented by their Hall of Famer, Pat Gillick along with Bill GilesPhils alums Pat Corralles and Bob Boone will be the Reps for the Nationals.
