Phungo Cards - B J Upton

2009 Phungo #2 B J Upton

The Phils make there way north for a couple of exhibition games versus the Tamp Bay Rays Tonight and Tomorrow. The Rays are the same team the Phils faced the last time they played at Citizen's Bank Ballpark this past October. One of the Rays Superstars is B J Upton. Upton is the bright young centerfielder that should help them remain competitive for the next several years.

This Picture was taken prior to the beginning of the first half of Game 5. Upton took some warm up swings while stretching near the Left Field foul line. I gave Upton card number 2 to match his uniform number and marked his position as CF for Centerfield, rather than the generic OF for outfield.

Rocco Baldelli was running and stretching in the same area as Upton during warm-ups, but I never did get a suitable photo of him. Hopefully I will catch Rocco at a Red Sox game sometime this year.

Tonights game doesn't count, but it feels good to know that the boys are back in town and the Opening day is just around the corner.

Phillies in the Hall of Fame

The National Baseball Hall of Fame will host an exhibit dedicated to the 2008 World Series. Items will be featured that were used or worn by Cole Hamels, Ryan Howard, Carlos Ruiz, Jayson Werth, Joe Blanton, BJ Upton, Joe Maddon, Carl Crawford and others.

The Exhibit starts Mid-November and runs through the 2008 Post-Season.

Maybe they will include the pants that Cole Hamels wore as he walked out to the bullpen to warm up for game 5.

Or perhaps they will include the spikes that B J Upton is wearing as he takes warm up swings in the photo below which was taken prior to game 5 part 1.

I am slowly sifting through pictures from last week - most are pretty blurry like those above, but I should still find some worth posting.

Bring on the Rays

2008 Topps Year In Review #YR110 B J Upton

B J Upton and the rest of the Rays have won the 2008 ALCS and will be facing the Philadelphia Phillies. I like this card because it mentions two of the Rays good young players Upton and Dioner Navarro and it is also commemorates a game where the Rays defeated the AL East Goliath New York Yankees. In the ALCS the Rays defeated the other AL East perennial champion Boston Red Sox.

The Rays are a well balanced team with good hitting, fielding, and pitching. They should present a formidable challenge for the Phils. Looking forward to the Series - just wishing it wasn't so far away.

For coverage of the Rays I will be checking in at Fielder's Choice. I am sure we will have much to talk about over the next two weeks.
