Phungo 5 with Tribe Cards

This week the Phils sort of conclude the home portion of interleague play with a three game set against the Cleveland Indians. Today, we check in with Dave, the man in charge over at Indians Baseball Cards and Random Wax, to find out what is going on with the Tribe.

1) How are all those ex-Phils looking for the Indians?
How are ANY players looking for the Tribe these days? It's a rough go of things, and will be for 2-3 more seasons.

2) Who will represnt the Indians at the All Star game?

I suppose Choo, though I don't think there is a true "All-Star" on the team this year.

3) What teams (if any) went unclaimed in the Great Tribecards Giveaway?

Many teams actually went unclaimed, thus were given away as mega-fodder. Off the top of my head, I don't specifically remember which teams went unclaimed. Padres, maybe? That's a guess.

4) What number should the Indians retire next?
I can't think of one yet. Ideally, for me, it would be 25 (Thome), but that's just me playing favorites.

5) Who was your Favorite "Drew Carey Show" character?
Surprisingly, I never watched the show that I can remember.

Hmm 4 out of 5 - I am betting that "the Drew Carey Show" aired while Dave was busy raising kids. To be honest I did not watch the show much myself, but I just want to mention that Lisa(Katy Selverstone) is one of my favorite girlfriends of a television character ever.

On Deck

As mentioned above the Cleveland series is sort of the last home series of Interleague play for the Phils. By sort of I mean that this is the last series in which they will bat last. This weekends Blue Jays Series with the Phils (originially scheduled for Toronto) has been moved to Philadelphia. The Phils will host the game but the game will be played as if it is Toronto. There will be a DH and the Phils will bat first.

2006 Fleer Decade Greats #DEC-SC Steve Carlton

This card will get its own post eventually - for now just wanted to post it and note that I enjoy the concept of producing a retro card dedicated to a decade of a players career. If this photo looks familiar, it is because you have seen the same picture on a 2008 UD Heroes card of Carlton.



2001 UD Hall of Fame National Pastime #68 Mike Schmidt

Ther other Hall of Famer from the Phils 1980 Championship Squad. This card looks a little better than the scan. The chrome sort of gets lost in the darker colors here.

It took me most of the weekend to sort through the lot. I was impressed with how many of the cards filled some pretty specific needs in a variety of venues: Phils Topps Collection, Player Collections, Inserts, Bowman Draft Set, Phungo Games, and Singles from Sets that I had not seen.

Thanks for putting this together Dave, I am sure it was a truly Herculean effort and I am glad that you were good enough to put in the time to sort the cards and send out the great packages.

Tribe Cards Allen Ginter Group Break - The Phils and other Phun Stuff

Dave over at Tribe Cards hosted a great box break that was right in my wheelhouse. For a mere $5 one could get all the cards of a certain team out of a Hobby Box of Allen & Ginter. I obviously picked the Phils and was very happy with the results.

Love the Cole Mini and nice to get the A&G back Moyer mini also. The remainder of the PHils included Chase Utley, Jayson Werth, Jamie Moyer Base Card and Brett Myers.

There are obviously cards in Allen Ginter that are not associated with any team. These were divided randomly amongst the break participants.

And some teams were unclaimed - that is how KC Royal Greinke ended up in the Phungo Collection. Bringham Young and Justin Moreneau were some of the other bonus cards that were sent my way.

Dave did a tremendous job as usual with the break. He went the extra mile by reinserting the cards in an Allen Ginter wrapper (pictured above) which gave me the excitement of opening a pack. He also designed a Special Tribe Cards Allen Ginter Return Addy sticker:

Indians Baseball Cards. And then some... found himself with a few extra cards and I believe under threat of eviction was good enough to offer them up to other collectors.

Being the good person that I am and understanding Dave's plight I offered to provide a home for the extra cards and when I say extra cards....I mean extra cards!!! Dave sent out two 300 count boxes of cards. I will be sorting them out for days.

Above are some of the Highlights. In 1993 UD produced an All-Time Heroes set that homages the Hassan T-202 cards from 1912. The cards are a nice idea and very sharp looking.

1983 is a set that I am pretty light on, and may be the last year that I collected cards before returning to the hobby. Bob Dernier was one of my favorite players in the mid-80s and this is a great addition to the collection.

I will always have mixed emotions about Scott Rolen. He always played hard and put up good numbers, but boy could he be a Diva sometimes.

A lot of the cards Dave sent over were from the late 80s and early 90s, but there were a handful of cool newer cards like this Turkey Red Kyle Kendrick.

12 days of Cardmas

I received my 12 day of Cardmas gift from David of Tribe Cards and opened on Christmas day.

As I have mentioned in the blog bat around and elsewhere, I am interested in collecting cards representing games I have been to. I collect primarily baseball. Consequently I have (or had) very few cards of players that I have seen play in the other sports. I let Dave know that I was interested in cards from a couple of football and hoop teams that I had seen. And he did a real nice job. Ok, I hope I got the categories right and everyone get ready to sing the song. Lets have a look.
