First Ballot Hall of Famer???: 2012 Phungo Cards #30 Mariano Rivera

2012 Phungo Cards #30 Mariano Rivera

After Tuesday's night's Mariano LoveFest at Citifield and some discussion on Twitter today, we are taking a look at the Career of the games most prolific closers. It is basically considered a given that Mariano Rivera and his 638 Saves are destined for Cooperstown.

I won't argue that - but I want to look into a superlative aspect of that question.

Is Mariano Rivera a First Ballot Hall of Famer?

*Stats as of 2013-07-17

There are by my count only 5 HoF closers.  They are the first set below Super Mariano.  Among those 5 there is exactly 1 First Ballot Qualifier, Dennis Eckersley. Of course Eck had 2 careers, 1 as a starter and a 2nd as a closer.

As the only first ballot qualifier, Eckersley is probably the most important comp in this discussion.

How does Mo Stack up?  On the minus side Eckersley has his tremendous 1992 season in which he won both the MVP and  Cy Young Awards.  Rivera's best finishes are 9th and 2nd respectively for the two awards. In 2005 the Cy Young Award went to Bartolo Colon - depending on how you feel about PED use one could default the award to Rivera. The 2nd minus is in the career WAR column.  Rivera is 7 WAR wins behind. This is a conundrum in that the bulk(73%) of Eck's career WAR happened as a starter, yet it is accepted that he was elected to the Hall as a closer.

The Plusses are less debatable - granted the era's have changed but Rivera is almost 250 saves in front of Eckersley in career saves and counting. Finally there are the 5 World Championships.  Mariano Rivera has always been in a class of his own and this is the one number that truly separates him.

The Cy Young/MVP award is the only category that separates Rollie Fingers from Rivera.

Rivera outranks Goose Gossage in almost every category charted. Bruce Sutter perhaps the weakest of the candidates does have his 5 save titles v Mariano's 3 and a Cy Young Award.

Hoyt Wilhelm is close in WAR, but is somewhat in a different category as well.  It is also worth noting that Wilhelm was a 2nd place finisher for 1952 Rookie of the Year and lost 3 season to the service during the early part of his career.

Lee Smith, John Franco and Jeff Reardon
All good closers, none in Rivera's class.  Franco probably was dismissed from the ballot a bit early.

Out of the Past
During my research a couple of names came up that I felt as though were worth charting. Lindy McDaniel was a 1950s "bonus baby" who showed up on a number of comps. It appears that this resulted in a career WAR comparable to Sutter and Fingers.  Elroy Face was the career saves leader for a few years prior to Wilhelm taking over the category in 1964. Face also had his notable 1959 season when he posted an 18-1 record as a reliever.  Firpo Marberry held the saves record from 1926-1945. He was a member of the 1924 Washington Senators squad that won the franchises only World Series in DC

Phungo Card

The Photo on Today's Phungo card is a bit of an oddity in that it is from a game in which Rivera blew a save in an April 24th 2011 game v the Baltimore Orioles. Brian Roberts hit a game tying single with 2 out in the 9th.
In the end the Yankees picked up the victory with a 3 run 11th.

ReWind: 1964 All-Star Game - 1965 Topps #310 Johnny Callison

The Last time the All-Star Game was hosted by the Mets was at old Shea Stadium in 1964.  The game was a big one for one Phillies Rep.

1965 Topps #310 Johnny Callison

With the scored tied in 2 outs in the 9th Johnny Callison hit a 3 run homer to give the NL a 7-4 walk off victory.

The moment noted on the reverse of Callison's 1965 Topps card:

Commons from the much loved 65T set can often be found in the 3/Buck bin.  A semi-star like Callison would likely fetch somewhere between 50 cents adn a dollar. Commons from the set run from #1-370. The High Numbers start at 371 and run to the end of the set, 598. Non-stars among High Numbers go for around a dollar.

2013 Topps All-Stars Home Run Derby Cards

On Sunday Team Phungo was fortunate enough to make it to Citi Field to see the All-Star Futures Game. One of the nice things about the Futures Game is that you get to see a lot of the background of what goes into putting together game without having to shell out ASG money.

One of the items the Mets have is the Topps Lineup cards similar to the Phillies.  For Monday Night the cards are specail ASG cards of the Home Run Derby participants.

Don't be afraid of the Future - 2013 edition

All-Star Future's Game that is.  Check out this photo of players involved in the 2006 edition of the game held in Pittsburgh.

Troy Tulowitzki, Cameron Maybin, Hunter Pence, Alex Gordon, Billy Butler, Nick Adenhart, Howie Kendrick, Ryan Braun.  (2006 07 09)

First there is the sadness of seeing Nick Adenhart (#21 removing his cap) in the photo with the rest of the superstars.  You see all that talent standing around him and....well you just wonder.

Braun, Tulo, and Pence went 1-2-3 in the 2007 Rookie of the Year voting.

The World Team that day featured future 2010 NL MVP Joey Votto
Gio Gonzalez and Carlos Carrasco were the Phillies reps in 2006.  Other players that took the field that day included Stephen Drew, Nolan Reimold, Neil Walker, Phil Hughes, Homer Bailey, CarGo, Yovani Gallardo, and Pablo Sandoval.

Last Years Futures Game included Manny Machado, Jurickson Profar, Billy Hamilton, Wil Myers, Mike Olt, Nick Castellanos, Zack Wheeler and many others.
This year the Futures Game will  be held at 2pm (edt) Sunday July 14 at the Mets home Citi Field and Team Phungo will be there!!! Tickets to the showcase can be found on Stubhub for as little as $6 for SRO.

Snapshots 2013 07 09 Nationals 2 @ Phillies 4

Team Phungo finally got too see a Phillies W on Tuesday night. Phils won the game 4-2 behind the strong pitching of Cole Hamels

Taylor Jordan v Darin Ruf

It has been warm and muggy here for about a week.  Tuesday was more of the same, but we did get occasional breezes and dodged the rain.  It is to small to make out the players here, but that is Darin Ruf batting, getting a start while Ryan Howard is on the DL.

Cole Hamels v Bryce Harper

These two have a bit of a history,  Hamels came out on top last night as Harper went 0-3.

 Ben Revere

After a slow start to his Phillies career Ben Revere has been much improved recently. On Tuesday he went 2-4 raising his BA to .302.

Reading the Competition: 1978 Topps #317 Dave Johnson

This week the Phillies are hosting the reigning NL East champion Washington Nationals for a 4 game set. The Nats will be led for one last season by one time Phillies infielder Davey Johnson

1978 Topps #317 Dave Johnson

Davey Johnson put together a nice career the bulk of which he spent with the Orioles including two World Championship Teams (1966, 1970). The four time all-star reached the postseason a total of five times, four with the Orioles and once with the 1977 Phillies.

He collected 1200+ hits including 136 homers across 13 seasons. It appears that Davey Johnson was pretty good at working pitchers enabling him to grind out a decent .340 OBP despite only being a .261 hitter. He was also good in the field collecting 3 gold gloves at 2nd base.

Davey Johnson moved from Baltimore to Atlanta in 1973 and had a truly unique season - As an Oriole he had 66 dingers in just under 3500 ABs. His first year with the Braves he hit 43 (2nd to Willie Stargell 44).  That would be a call for a PED test if it happened today.

As a part time player for the 1977 Phillies Johnson batted .321 with good numbers for his meager 156 ABs.  Those numbers fell off in 1978 he was traded to the Cubs where is playing career ended.

Skipper
I have no idea what gets a guy into the Hall of Fame as a manager, but I think Davey Johnson may be qualified.  He has managed for five different franchises, and won division titles with four of them. He has won 5 division titles (6 if you count the 1994 Reds strike shortened season) and he of course was the leader of the 1986 Mets squad that beat the Red Sox.  1300+ Wins and counting.

1967 Topps #363 Dave Johnson

Carded
Davey Johnson's rookie card is 1965 Topps #473 which is shared with Paul Blair. His 1966 #579 is also a shared card so he doesn't show up solo on a card until 1967 Topps #363  (above). The amazing thing here is after showing up on 2 Rookie Stars cards he finally gets a solo card and it has a rookie cup. This means that Topps issued cards specifying Johnson as a rookie for 3 consecutive years.  The 1957 #363 card is also Johnson's first card that is not part of a more limited hi-number series.

I think the 1978 Topps card at the top is the only one with Johnson representing the Phillies. His last card as a player is 1979 #513 with the Cubs. My research in the Topps Baseball Card Database indicates that every card lists him as Dave Johnson, rather then the Davey Johnson that I have always heard.

2013 Phungo #6 Ryan Howard - out 6-8 weeks

On Monday the Phillies announced that Ryan Howard has been scheduled for surgery and will be out 6-8 weeks.

2013 Phungo #6 Ryan Howard

If those dates are accurate, best case scenario has Howard returning on Monday 8/19 v the Rockies.  That will be game 124 of the Phillies season. The Phils play 34 games in the interim. If the Braves play 2 games over that period they will be 68-54 (+14). To get to that the Phils would have to go 26-8 over that span.

A lot of things happen this time of year the All-Star break is much needed for the Phils, but immediately after that the Phillies could be severely revamped and Ryan Howard more than likely will be returning to a different team.

Phungo Card
Pix was taken on Phillies Photo day in 2012.  A great opportunity for fans to get out and gets some snapshots of their favorite players. At the time Ryan Howard had recently returned from the DL. he really hadn't hit well yet, but on that day he did get a 3 run homer.  Unfortunately it wasn't good enough as the Phils lost to the Giants 6-5 in extra innings.
