The Philly Show is back in Valley Forge this weekend. Busy times at HQ right now, Not sure if team Phungo will be able to make the trek.

I hope I get there as both of my favorite dealers are scheduled to be at the show. If anyone else is going let me know and I will keep an eye open for you.

There are always autograph guests at the Philly Show, this edition of the show is largely football based, but there is one baseball player scheduled to appear, Don Money.

1971T finds Money at the peak of the five seasons he spent with Philadelphia. As can seen on his back stats he compiled 14 Homers along with a .295 average - In today's modern stats that would be a very healthy 123 OPS+ and a 3.5 WAR. 

Other Autographs
There are a number of football guests at the show including Hall of Famers Jack Lambert, Lenny Moore (age 83!), Gino Marchetti (89!), and Herb Adderley. Famous Notre Dame alum Rudy will be there as well.

Cy Young and MVP in the Same Season - Can it happen again: Tigers Justin Verlander 2013 Topps Triple Threads

Clayton Kershaw took home the NL Cy Young Award tonight, now we await what is probably the biggest question mark in the 2014 Awards Season.

Can Clayton Kershaw take the dual Cy Young/MVP Award Hardware. Personally I am from the Pitchers get there own award, Position players should get the other award school of thought.  However, this season the NL really hasn't had a standout candidate. Cases can be made for Andrew McCutchen, Giancarlo Stanton, and Jonathan LuCroy. For me the strongest case among the hitters is McCutchen. In addition to putting up good offensive numbers at the plate, he really carried the Pirates.  When he was out of the lineup the Bucos struggled, upon his return, they made a run that got them into the playoffs. Curiously according to B-R Andrew McCutchen is an average fielder. Had he had a +1 or +2 dWAR season, his overall number would have been more comparable to Kershaws.

The Last time a Pitcher took both awards was relatively recently. In 2011 Justin Verlander won the award over Jacoby Ellsubry, Dustion Pedroia, Miguel Cabrera and others - Ben Zobrist won the WAR crown that year, but a significant portion of the number was defense based. 

2013 Topps 3x Threads
Topps noted Verlander's 2011 double dip on the above Triple Threads card. I am not a big relic or serial collector but those two features combined with the magnitude of the player featured pushed this card onto the buy side at a recent card show. The "M" in MVP is to large and somewhat mars the overall look of the card, otherwise it is decent looking. The Card went for $8 which is probably the most I have ever paid for any relic, including Phillies.

Philly Show 2014 09 28 - Vintage

Just gonna do some quick Show and Tell from the Philly Show this past weekend. I spent about 3 hours at the show. I was there on Sunday which is a football day in Philadelphia, consequently the floor didn't feel too busy. The autograph guests on Sunday were the weaker of the two days as well - In addition 1960s era Phillies infielder had to postpone his appearance.

I attended the event without a real plan but felt pretty good about the day. The bulk of my time was spent at two tables. If things go well this should be the first of four installments on the show: 1) Vintage, 2) Non-Sports Tobacco Cards 3) Recent AutoGamers 4) Dime Box

Today we will start our series by looking at Team Phungo's favorite collecting areas, Vintage Cards.

1952 Topps #223 Del Ennis

The above Del Ennis card at $4 was my favorite buy of the show. Yeah it has some A-side writing, but I can live with that. Rest of card is a bit soft and creased, but good enough for the Phungo Checker.

I picked the 52T Ennis up from Uncle Dicks Cards - One of my favorite vendors at the Philly show. Dick has thousands of vintage cards in my favorite condition - Loved. He also has cards in more pristine condition, but for me his off-condition cards are just fine for my Phils Checker and set collecting needs. He also has an fun crew at his side and there is often humorous banter at his stand. In addition Dick has several collector friendly touches, there are plenty of chairs, he has paint sticks laid out to help as markers for perusing stacks. Everything in his booth is tagged bright green which makes his stand easy to spot.


I also picked up 4 other 1952 Mid-Number cards for $7-$8 each including #270 Lou Brissie.

Philly Show 9/28

The Phily Show is all weekend but Team Phungo has been to busy to pitch the event. Hopefully we will be able to make an appearance on Sunday.

1961 Topps #473 Bobby Shantz

For those of you that collect autographs there are a number of former players appearing on Sunday. These players include a number of folks that we have been featuring in our 1964 Phillies retrospective. Scheduled for Sunday are Art Mahaffey, Bobby Wine, Frank Thomas, Costen Shockley Tony Gonzalez and Bobby Shantz

1964 Phillies @ 50 Art Mahaffey

Fifty years ago on Sunday the 1964 Phillies entered the day 6 1/2 games up with 12 to play.

The Philies faced the Reds that day sending Art Mahaffey to the mound. He pitched very well taking a shutout into the 6th inning and then something happened. With 2 outs, Mahaffey faced future Hall of Famer Frank Robinson with a runner on 3rd base. 

Chico Ruiz, the runner at 3rd base, broke for the plate. Mahaffey's pitch went wide and Ruiz scored. It was the only run the Reds scored. Unfortunately for the Phillies they were shutout by John Tsitsouris. It is the game that started the 1964 Phillies famous collapse -The first of 10 consecutive losses the club would endure.

The Phils World Series aspirations evaporated during those two weeks, The St Louis Cardinals took the league by 1 game over the Phillies.

1964 Phillies @ 50: Rick Wise 1972 Topps #44 IA

The weekend of September 26-28 The PhillyShow returns to the Valley Forge Convention Center (and now casino) for one their tri-annual visits. As time marches on the card show is becoming more of an autograph show which I have some quibbles with, but I won't let that keep me from mentioning a few guests.

This edition of the autograph portion of the show features a no-hitter theme.  Roy Halladay, Tommy Greene, and Terry Mulholland are all scheduled to appear - For a mere $3000 you can get special VIP access to a private autograph session with five of the Phillies No-Hit pitchers.

1972 Topps #44 Rick Wise IA

One of the guests included in the No-Hit Quintuplet is Rick Wise. I was a bit surprised to find out that Wise made his debut with the 1964 Phillies. He and Jim Bunning are both members of the crossover between the handful of 1964 Phillies and No-Hit pitchers that will be at the show.

Rick Wise and Jim Bunning bare a connection in no-hitter history. As a rookie in 1964 Rick Wise made his second career start in the latter game of the Double-header in which Jim Bunning pitched his perfect game.

A mere two days past the 7th anniversary of the Bunning Perfecto, Rick Wise would throw his own No-Hitter, and it was done in spectacular fashion.  Most importantly, Wise shut down a star laden Reds line-up that featured 2 future Hall of Famers (Johnny Bench & Tony Perez) and MLBs all-time hits leader Pete Rose. Wise also hit not one but two Home Runs that day. He accounted for 3 of the Phils 4 runs in the 4-3 victory.  

Wise did get to the World Series but not for the Phillies. As most folks know he was traded to the St Louis Cardinals for Steve Carlton - he was later traded to the Boston Red Sox. As a member of the Bosox Wise got the W versus the A's in the deciding game of the 1975 ALCS. In the ensuing World Series Wise was awarded the Win as a reliever for game 6 - The legendary Carlton Fisk game.

Following his playing career Wise stayed in baseball holding various coaching positions in the A's organization. He also coached in the Independent Atlantic league for the nearby Lancaster Barnstormer.  Wise retired from coaching in 2008.

Rick Wise was traded for two Hall of Famers. In addition to Carlton Wise was also involved in a trade for Dennis Eckersley just prior to the 1978 season


1972 Topps In Action
The In Action Sub/Insert Set consisted of 24 cards in 1972 Topps that Paralleled a base card of the subject. In 2011 the late Chris Stufflestreet authored this post that summarizes the card backs associated with the 1972T IA cards.

1963 Fleer #50 Ruben Amaro

The December version of the PhillyShow was a bit of a mess for a variety of reasons. Shane Victorino was unable to make the show and the promoter failed to update their website.

There are a variety of reasons why cancellations might happen and it is usually excusable. Both local promoter Poppel and regional CSA (who run the Chantilly Show) seems to do a good job of keeping their customers updated.   At the PhillyShow I think there is at least a 50% chance of at least one guest no-show and I have NEVER seen a pre-show announcement by Hunt Auctions or Philly Show regarding a cancellation.  In Fact the Shane Victorino appearance is STILL on the Sports Vault website

Okay enough of that drama. Lets talk about some cards - first up a couple of 1963 Fleer Cards

The Ruben Amaro card above is one of two 1963F Phillies cards that I picked up. The other was #54 Art Mahaffey.

1963 Fleer #54 Art Mahaffey

1963 Fleer is a set that I am fond of and at various times have consider building. The abbreviated set is a mere 66 cards - Due to a legal action from Topps, Fleer was only able to produce a single series. The series is significant for containing the first Maury Wills card.

There are five Philies in the set. The Amaro and Mahaffey cards seen here are the bookends for the 63F Phillies team set which runs from #50-54. The three middle cards are Johnny Callison, Clay Dalrymple and Don Demeter. If you want an easy to build Vintage Phillies team set, this may be the one for you - each of the above cards went for $2.

1983 NL Champions Marty Bystrom 1983 Topps #199 - Headed to the SHOW (Philly Show that is)

Today our 1983 Champs series takes a quick look at Right Handed Starter Marty Bystrom

1983 Topps #199 Marty Bystrom 

Marty had a tough 1983 season as a bottom starter in the Phillies rotation. So poor that Bystrom didn't get a start in the postseason. His sole inning was versus the Orioles in the final game of the World Series.  In 1983 the 24 year old Marty Bystrom was already on his way out of baseball. His 119+ innings in '83 were the most he would pitch in a season, by June of 1984 he was on his way to the Yankees in a deal that would return Shane Rawley. Bystrom got 15 more starts with the Yankees over two seasons then was done at the Major league level.

I doubt Marty would have made the cut for our Wheeze Kids series, but he is one of several Phillies in town to sign autographs at the Philly Show in Valley Forge this weekend. The show runs Friday 12/6 - Sunday 12/8 at the Valley Forge Casino. Admission is $8 - There may be a $1 off coupon in local papers.

Philly Show in Valley Forge Friday Through Sunday

The PhillyShow returs to Valley Forge this weekend. Team Phungo is a bit under the weather so I am not sure I will be attending. Game time decision for Saturday. Tix for the show are $8. Some local papers have a $1 off coupon in the Friday Sports sections.

Among the autograph guests this weekend are HoF and Politician Jim Bunning, Steve Bedrosian, Charlie Hayes, Eagles RB Brian Westbrook, Ravens and Rutgers RB and recent SuperBowl Champ Ray Rice and Wrestler Ric Flair.

On Saturday Sixers Alum and ambassador Darryl "Chocolate Thunder" Dawkins is scheduled for complimentry autographs.

PhillyShow Review - 2012 12 08

Doubt I will get time to do a lot of show and tell posts on the show - so I will just do the telling part with some random observations regarding the 3 or so hours I spent at the show.

Autographs

If you want to flood the show floor in the Philadelphia  area, plan a Chase Utley signing. 

That being said, I am not sure many of the folks their to get Utley's autograph were actually purchasing cards. I was impressed that the numbers called out for the signings by So Taguchi and Terry Mulholland numbered over 200.

Hoarding

I rarely pick up the autographs at the PhillyShow - the pricing is way above my interest level for autos.  Of course my thriftyness ends there - I ended up throwing down close to $200 on mostly vintage Phillies, Hall of Famers, and star cards. 

Cards - Phillies Vintage

- I was happy to knock out 4 of the 5 1957 Topps middle series cards that I needed.  This Series is the hardest to find in the 1957 set and covers #255-#352.  The four cards in this purchase varied in pricing from $1.20 to $2.  

- Picked up the 1960-62 Richie Ashburn cards (which are not Phillies cards but are with the Mets and Cubs) for $5.50 combined. 

- The most expensive Phillies card I picked up was 1949 Bowman #193 Ken Trinkle.  This is part of the Hi Series and went for $5.  This was also the oldest card I picked up.

- 1960 Topps #264 Robin Roberts $1.50 

- 1956 Topps #72 Phillies Team card $3.

Hall of Fame Vintage

- Added Ralph Kiner to my collection of HoF cards of player from their active era. 1952 Bowman #11 Ralph Kiner $6 - it's creased, thus the fairly cheap price .

- 1954 Topps #3 Monte Irvin $5 

- 1968 Topps Game Mickey Mantle $5

- 1956 Topps #17 Emlen Tunnell (Football) $2

- All the Ashburn and Roberts cards above

Philly Show returns to Valley Forge June 22-24

Hunt Auctions brings the Philly Show back to the Valley Forge Convention Center/VF Casino this weekend.

They have added a Casino to the convention center which requires a membership to get into.  I don't know how or if this will affect admission to the card show.  I suspect that you will be able to get a day passed included to the Casino with your Card show admission.  Show admission is $8 - you can pick up a $1 off coupon in some of the local papers (of course the paper costs a buck so it's a push)

Unfortunately, I have a couple of other comittments and doubt I will be able to make the show this wkend.

Autograph Signers

The signers for this weekends show include Phillies Alums Dave Cash, David West and Orioles Hall of Famer Jim Palmer on Saturday.  HoF Dennis Eckersley, former Phil Terry Harmon and 1960s era 76ers Chet Walker.

It does not appear that Hunt Auctions is offering a complimentry auto.

Philly Card Show in Valley Forge (3/2-4) POSTPONED

The Valley Forge Convention Center is undergoing major renovations as part of the Casino that is being added to the facility. 

Unfortunately this has caused Hunt Auctions to postpone the Philly Shows March edition until June of this year.

The Autographs for the Philly show are run by MAB - they had a healthy list of signers scheduled - no info on which of these guests will be part of the June Show.

This means the next Major show to come to the area will be the CSA show in Oaks which falls the weekend of 4/27.

Phiadelphia Sports and Memorablia Show returns December 2nd - 4th

Lately the majority of posts here have been card show related.  I am not doing this to make those of you that don't have nearby shows envious - we just happened to have 2 pretty decent shows running a few weekends apart here. 

The Philly Show returns to Valley Forge this weekend.  Team Phungo expects to hit the show on Saturday depending on the status of my sprained ankle.  In the vernacular of espn I am Day-To-Day (but then again aren't we all). 

The Show which is run by the local Hunt Auctions isn't quite as good for me as the CSA shows at the Oaks convention center, but it is still a decent show.  Show Admission is $8, typically there is a $1 off coupon in the local papers, the weekend of and prior to the show. 

Hunt Auctions is always giving more room and attention to their autograph guests - which are almost always out of my price range.  This year for the first time there are signers on Friday Night - Jockey Steward Elliot, and Brad Lidge.  Saturday is dedicated primarily to the 2008 World Championship Phillies team with Ryan Howard, Shane Victorino,  Chris Coste, Charlie Manuel and Pedro Feliz among the guests.  Sunday is focused on the 1983 NL Pennant Winners and includes SIX er I mean FIVE Hall of Famers Schmidt, Carlton, Tony Perez, Joe Morgan, Jim Bunning, and uhm some guy they played with named Pete Rose - All the above are $45 - $69. 

The shows complimentry Auto on Saturday is of local sportscaster Michael Barkann, while on Sunday it is Ike Reese.  The Barkann as the complimentry auto is insulting.  At the Oaks show in the spring they had 2 complimentry autos for a $5 adimission and they were both actual players (Gary Matthews Sr and Art Mahaffey). 

Regardless, the rest of the show is typically pretty decent.  There are two vendors I like to hit for dimers and off grade vintage cards one is a guy that comes down from Connecticut and usually has a dozen or so dime boxes of all sorts of singles and commons - The other is Uncle Dick who has a flourascent green theme and has lots of cheap vintage sorted by year.  Hopefully I will have some positive news to report on the show next week.

Philly Show Returns this Weekend

The Philly Show returns to Valley Forge this weekend, March 4-6.  The show comes to the area three times a year and I enjoy it every time I attend.

2011 Phungo #50 Jamie Moyer


The most disappointing part of the show is that it becomes more expensive autograph autograph show and les card show every year.  This weekend the big autograph day for baseball is Saturday.  Friday is primarily Flyers and Sunday is basically dedicated to the Eagles.

Jamie Moyer is one of the signers on Saturday.  I already have Mr Moyer's autograph, so I doubt I will shell out the $40 for his signature.  The Free Auto on Saturday is former Phils pitching coach Joe Kerrigan.  I will likely will wait in the 2 minute line for his autograph.  Hall of Famer Orlando Cepeda will be part of Saturday's festivities ($30).  Mr Hockey, Gordie Howe, will be autographing items for $89.

Note the scheducled Dick Allen signing has been CANCELED.  This unfortunately has become a pattern of the Philly Show.  At almost every show there is a major cancellation or postponement.  Last Year both Jim Palmer and Roy Halladay were not present for their announed shows.      

Friday is Flyers day with several past and present players including Danny Briere, Bernie Perant, Dave Schultz, Rick Tocchet, and Reggie Leach.

Sunday is dedicated to the Eagles. The Free Auto is Calvin Williams.  Harold Carmichael at $25 is the deal of the day to me.  Brian Dawkins, Brian Westbrook, and DeSean Jackson are all over $60.

I expect to be at the show on Saturday hunched over a dime box looking for cheap singles.  If anyone plans to attend the show let me know and we can hook up.

Admission to the show is $8.  There is usually a $1 off coupon in the local weekend papers.

Philly Show Returns this Weekend

 

1981 Fleer #645 Triple Threat Schmidt, Rose, Bowa



Team Phungo will not be able to make it to the next edition of the Philadelphia Sportscards and Memorabilia Show which is happening this weekend. 


I have always enjoyed the show and encourage anyone interested in card collecting to attend.  Although it appears that the show is becoming more and more an autograph show then a show for card vendors.  

There is a BIG 1980 Phils Reunion going on for the show with roughly 20 members of the 1980 World Series team scheduled to appear either Saturday or Sunday.  The Big Names are all scheduled to be there on at least one of the two days Carlton and Schmidt on Saturday - Pete Rose on Sunday. 

I tend to think Autos at these shows are a bit pricey - but I think when you stack him up against the rest of the field Steve Carlton at $39 is the best deal of the big names (Roy Halladay is $149).  I like Keith Moreland at $12 in the bargain set - I don't think he is really affiliated with the Phils right now and he would be one of the tougher ones to get in person.  The complimentary auto with the weekend admissions is from Philadelphia Eagle Trevor Laws.

Admission to the Show is $8 - You can usually get $1 off coupons in the weekend Philadelphia Papers.

The Philly Show is this weekend September 24-26. The Admission at the most recent show was $8 I think. The local papers usually contain a $1 off admission coupon in the Fri-Sat-Sun editions.

It's not quite the National, but the Philly Show is good size. I imagine most collectors will find something they enjoy. I would estimate there are around a hundred dealers. Lots of vintage, Lots of autos, inserts , Dime Boxes, Junk autos. There are always a couple of dealers selling new hobby boxes and some older hobby boxes - but selection varies.

This weekends show has several autograph signers spread over Saturday and Sunday. Saturday is 93 Phillies Day, while Sunday is Hall of Famer Day.

Among the signers on Saturday are Curt Schilling $79, Darren Daulton $20, Wes Chamberlain $15, and Tommy Greene $12.

Sunday has a bunch of Big Names: Dr J, Reggie, and Andre Dawson @ $149, $89, $59 respectively.

The complimentary autos are Terry Harmon on Saturday and Ricky Bottalico on Sunday.

Philly Card Show Report - 2010 03 13 - Vintage Phillies

Extremely busy with work, catching up on trades, and enjoying the first weekend of the Madness.

During the latest edition of the Philly Show, I pretty much focused on vintage. Including admission I threw down $81 - I will hit the highlights over the next week or so.

First off is the Phils

1950 Bowman #30 Eddie Waitkus

Anytime you get a bargain Eddie Waitkus card you pick it up. I will dedicate an entire post to Mr Waitkus at some point - but for now I will just mention that this card went for $3 and I was happy to have picked it up.

It must be Robin Roberts week here at Phungo, this is the 2nd consecutive post to feature a Roberts Card. The Team Card went for a dollar. Roberts was $5, a little bent up, but looks good otherwise. I doubt I a anywhere near finishing the Robin Roberts Phils Topps Run, but this card makes me one closer.

60s High Numbers and Other Stars

I also picked up a bunch of 60s era Phillies High Numbers and Star Cards. Both of these came out of the three for a buck bin.

Other than the Phils, I picked up about a dozen cards for my Topps '59 set and a bunch of Vintage HOF cards. In the three for a buck bin I found about 25 Star cards and High Numbers from 1957-1974. For between $1-$8 each I added a handful of 1952-1962 cards of commons, stars and Hall of Famers.

I will try and feature some of the other cards in the coming weeks.

Who's Autograph would You Stand in Line For?

As I mentioned earlier this week the Philadelphia SportsCard and Memorabilia Show is this weekend. In years past I have justified part of my admission by getting a complimentary autograph. Usually a lower tier player like Todd Pratt. This Saturday there will be no Free Autograph and I am curious who among the many signers you would consider standing in line for and handing over your hard earned cash.

Would you go the Cheap route and pick up an auto of Bobby Shantz (above) for $15?

Or go all out and get Cal Ripken ($132)

A more controversial choice may be Jim Bunning ($45)

This is great - The crack staff at hat put together the web page over at Hunt Auctions describes Jim Palmer as 4 time Gold Glove Winner.

Not Hall of Famer, or 3 Time Cy Young Winner or even Six Time All-Star. Or how about this one Four Time World Champion! Nope Just Four Time Gold Glove Winner. They would go nuts if Jim Kaat was there.

For my time and money Shantz would be the way to go. I would also consider Palmer and Feller at those numbers. To me Bunning at $45 is insane money.

Speaking of insane the football prices on Sunday are all out of kilter Leonard Weaver $30 and DeSean Jackson $70??

Who would you pick, anyone, noone?

Philly Show this Weekend

The next edition of the Philadelphia SportsCard and Memorabilia Show is this weekend.

I am not sure if I will be attending, but am considering Saturday.

Hunt Auctions is continuing it's trend towards making the show more autograph oriented. There are 15 signers scheduled over 3 days. Baseball players Friday and Saturday and all Eagles on Sunday. There is no complimentry auto scheduled for Saturday, The comp on Sunday is Eagles Safety Macho Harris.

Hall of Famers Cal Ripken, Bob Feller, Jim Palmer, and Jim Bunning will all be part of the weekend.

Admission has also been raised a dollar to 8 bucks. There are usually $1 off coupons in the weekend editions of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The price increase and the lack of a free auto are pointing me towards skipping this show, but I am sure I will cave.
