This is our third and final card dedicated to Terry Mulholland's 1990 No-Hitter.

Nice looking card I like the Highlights flair and the succinct "NO-HITS GIANTS" tag line. I do however ding them for picking a shot of Mulholland on the road rather than pitching at the Vet where he recorded the No-Hitter.

A very thorough write up here. Can you imagine a baseball card containing this much text today?

Too bad there is a glaring error in the first sentence. I am no journalists, but I do remember this from my 100 level Journalism course I took 30 years ago - Spell the names correctly and get the Dates right. Donruss failed on the date here as they have the No-Hitter a month early on July 15th rather than August 15.

The card has a second error while discussing a Baseball error. Donruss refers to Phillies Third Baseman Charlie Hayes as "Chris" - perhaps that is what his friends call him.

I give Donruss credit for mentioning that Mulholland pitched to the minimum and also name dropping Gary Carter at the end of the text.

The Donruss BC are essentially a subset of 1991 Donruss. BC consists of 22 cards split between the two Donruss series for 1991, Mulholland falls in S2. All nine of the 1990 no-hitters are represented in the Bonus Cards subber.

1990 Year of the No-Hitter: August 15th Terry Mulholland PT 2

This is what happens when you take those memorable Yellow 1991 Fleer Cards and lazily create a subset based off the original.

1991 Fleer Box Botton #8 Terry Mulholland

Just when you think 1991 Fleer can't look any worse, you add a quick game, date and score in the dullest font possible. The #8 refers to Mulholland's No-Hitter being the leagues eighth of the season which set the record - for purposes of the Fleer box bottom No-Hitter "subset" it is also the card number. 

The No-Hitter flair is the only thing of any interest here.

Fleer produced this card as part of a series of Box Bottom cards dedicated to the 1990 No-Hitters. Each Box Bottom contains 4 Cards, 3 No-Hitter related plus a fourth card that has a Team Logo. The Mulholland card shares a Panel with Andy Hawkins and Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan.

Speaking of the Express, I Just happened to see that Thorzul posted the Nolan Ryan Fleer Box Bottom as part of his most recent Pull the Trigger promo. This card is, of course, related to Ryan's No-Hitter which we featured two months ago.

Since these cards are Box Bottoms they are blank backed.

Terry Mulholland made year of the No-Hitter official by pitching the seasons eighth no-no en route to a 6-0 Phillies victory over his former club, the San Francisco Giants

1991 Score #706 No-Hit Club Terry Mulholland

Only one hitter reached base in Terry Mulholland's No-Hitter, Rick Parker on an Error by Phils Third Baseman Charlie Hayes. Hayes made up for his error when he speared a line drive off the bat of future Hall of Famer Gary Carter for the final out of the game.

1991 Score #706 No-Hit Club Terry Mulholland (b-side)

Terry Mulholland's pitched to the minimum in the no-hitter as Parker was erased on a double play two pitches after he reached. Notable players in the Giants lineup included Will Clark, Kevin Mitchell, and Matt Williams.

Darren Daulton caught Mulholland's No-Hitter and also hit a Home Run.

Similarly we will be putting together a miniseries for Terry Mulholland since he is a member of the local 9. Swag from Night Owl Cards - 2014 Topps #296 Domonic Brown

Team Phungo took a mini staycation during the early part of this week, unfortunately we had to return to the real world and all of it's concerns yesterday. The stress of the first workaday under the early AM of DST was mitigated a bit by fun card package from Greg over at Night Owl Cards that I received upon arriving home.

2014 Topps Red #296 Domonic Brown

Dom Brown is the Phillies only young star. Ok, "star" may be a bit generous. Browns first couple of season have been mixed. There was a couple of weeks early in 2013 when Dom hit the cover off the ball, Phils fans like myself are hopeful that this is a glimpse into who Domonic Brown will be in the future.

2014

Brown is having a lousy spring. He his hitting .107 through his first 28 ABs, before hitting a triple on Wednesday he was yet to collect and extra base hit. I am hoping for much bigger things from Domonic in the regular season. His 27 dingers in 2013 led the team, although the bulk of those came during the aforementioned 12 home run outburst in May. If Brown can come up with similar power and reach base a tad more that would make me happy. Dom can also be a bit comical in the field this shows up in his dWAR number which is a negative, Brown is young enough that hopefully he can turn this around as well.

2013 Allen & Ginter's mini #247 Ryan Howard

Another Phils player that the Phanatic has high hopes for is Ryan Howard, who we talked about last week in our Phillies 2014+ feature. Here we have a nice 2013 A&G mini of Mr Howard. For whatever reason there seems to be a lot of cards of Howard in the field, which is a bit of a mystery as he is often a liability with the glove.

2002 Donruss Originals #233 Rated Rookie Anderson Machado

Nice retro card from somebody other than Topps here. Machado never held on at the major league level. He has been kicking around the minors and according to Baseball-ref was last spotted in the Italian League.

1992 Sargento Mootown Snackers #16 Terry Mulholland

Definitely one for the Phungo type collection here. Never saw any cards from this issue. Also one of my player collections is dedicated Mulholland, at some point I will get organized enough to post some checkers for those palyers.

PhillyShow Review - 2012 12 08

Doubt I will get time to do a lot of show and tell posts on the show - so I will just do the telling part with some random observations regarding the 3 or so hours I spent at the show.

Autographs

If you want to flood the show floor in the Philadelphia  area, plan a Chase Utley signing. 

That being said, I am not sure many of the folks their to get Utley's autograph were actually purchasing cards. I was impressed that the numbers called out for the signings by So Taguchi and Terry Mulholland numbered over 200.

Hoarding

I rarely pick up the autographs at the PhillyShow - the pricing is way above my interest level for autos.  Of course my thriftyness ends there - I ended up throwing down close to $200 on mostly vintage Phillies, Hall of Famers, and star cards. 

Cards - Phillies Vintage

- I was happy to knock out 4 of the 5 1957 Topps middle series cards that I needed.  This Series is the hardest to find in the 1957 set and covers #255-#352.  The four cards in this purchase varied in pricing from $1.20 to $2.  

- Picked up the 1960-62 Richie Ashburn cards (which are not Phillies cards but are with the Mets and Cubs) for $5.50 combined. 

- The most expensive Phillies card I picked up was 1949 Bowman #193 Ken Trinkle.  This is part of the Hi Series and went for $5.  This was also the oldest card I picked up.

- 1960 Topps #264 Robin Roberts $1.50 

- 1956 Topps #72 Phillies Team card $3.

Hall of Fame Vintage

- Added Ralph Kiner to my collection of HoF cards of player from their active era. 1952 Bowman #11 Ralph Kiner $6 - it's creased, thus the fairly cheap price .

- 1954 Topps #3 Monte Irvin $5 

- 1968 Topps Game Mickey Mantle $5

- 1956 Topps #17 Emlen Tunnell (Football) $2

- All the Ashburn and Roberts cards above

- 1964 Topps League Leader cards with HoFs $2 (Koufax, Drysdale,  Aaron, Kaline, Mays, Santo, Killebrew etc)

Philly Show in Valley Forge this weekend 12/7 - 12/9 HoFs and Terry Mulholland

The PhillyShow returns to the Valley Forge Convention Center (and now casino) this weekend.  Show is FSS 12/7 - 12/9 with $8 admiission per day ($1 off coupons are in local papers)   

 

 

 

It may be December but this show will defintely have a baseball focus for autograph hounds. MAB has dubbed the show "A Celebration of Lefty's Magical Season".  This is a nod to Steve Carlton's historic 1972 Campaign in which he won 27 games en route to his first of four Cy Young awards.  Carlton will be flanked by several Phils Pasts and Present as well as other oFs including John Kruk, Darren Daulton, Tim McCarver, Tommy Greene, Dave Winfield, Frank Robinson, and Pete Rose.

 

 

 

Phungo covered Carlton in this post a few weeks back.  Today I would like to take a look at a different Phillies Left-hander who pitched for the team during another magical season 1993. Terry Mulholland will be one of the other signers in town over the weekend.

Mulholland will be remembered for a couple of things in Philadelphia. Just about anybody associated with the 1993 Phillies will be forever remembered fondly.  They were the Oasis between 80 and 08.  The one brief moment when Philadelphia was the misfit center of baseball - at the time we didn't know how misfit.  Regardless they were loved and remain so.

 

 

There was another big moment of personal glory beyond 1993 for Terry Mullholland - on August 15 1990 Terry Mulholland through a No-Hitter versus the San Francisco Giants. The only baserunner he allowed was on a Charlie Hayes error. That runner was erased via double play.  Hayes redeemed himself by spearing a line drive for the games final out.  Mulholland faced the minimum 27 batters.

 

 

Amazingly Mulholland's career lasted 2 decades! Pretty good for a player that many would look upon as mediocre. He extended is career by becoming a lefty bullpen specialist. Long after he left Philadelphia I followed his career in it's many stops (Atlanta, Arizona, Twins, Pittsburgh back to the Giants etc). Part of the reason he could stick as a lefty was because he had developed the Step Off Pick Off move.  It is currently used throughout baseball. 20 years ago Lefthanders always had remained on the rubber then stepped to first - risking a balk call - when attempting to hold a runner.  Mullholland just took his Left foot offf the rubber and through to first without stepping to the bag at all.

We don't talk about 90 Topps much here with good reason.  I think it is the worst design in the Topps canon.  However, I did like two things about this card - first it features Mulholland in a Phillis uniform and in a decent action shot. and...

Check out the 2nd sentence in the Mulholland Phun Phact.  That is what makes this common card a Phun Card.   

 

 

  

Terry Mullholland is scheduled to be one of the Saturday Signers - $30/auto.   There appears to be no complimentry autograph at this years show.
